1.16 Million OHIP Claims in Manual Review Every Year. The Government’s Problem — and Yours.

The News

On March 24, 2026, the OMA launched its ‘Fix OHIP’ campaign calling on the Ontario government to modernize the province’s billing system. The headline number: more than 1.16 million OHIP claims per year — over 1,000 per week — are stuck in manual review, leaving physicians waiting months or years for payment on care they’ve already delivered. The OMA estimates that resolving this backlog would free up 58,000 additional patient visits annually.

Andrew’s (or MAP’s) Take

The OMA is right to push for systemic change, and the Fix OHIP campaign makes the case compellingly. An independent ombuds office, clear appeal timelines, and AI-assisted claim review are all long overdue. But here’s the part the campaign doesn’t address: while the system gets fixed — which will take years — your cash flow is bleeding right now. In our experience, a significant portion of the claims that land in manual review aren’t just caught by government red tape. They’re flagged because of documentation gaps, outdated billing codes, or incomplete clinical notes that give the system a legitimate reason to pause. The OMA is fighting the battle at the policy level. MAP fights it at the claim level, for your practice, every week.

The Takeaway

You don’t have to wait for OHIP to be fixed to get paid faster. The next time your practice gets a manual review notice, what’s your process for responding? If the answer is ‘we handle it when we can,’ you may be leaving thousands on the table — and your patients’ records may be showing a gap in continuity of care as a result.
